Message:

Dear Member of Congress, Thank you for passing the Families First Emergency Response to Coronavirus, an important first step. Today, I am urging you to take the next vital step to support families—emergency funds for child care providers. Child Care providers are on the front lines -- caring for the children of our health care providers, public services staff and grocery store cashiers. Many families with school-aged children are relying on child care providers more than ever as school districts close one by one. Only when child care programs stay open and keep their staff healthy will our country prosper. But child care has not been included in the aid packages that have passed. Child care providers don't get disability or unemployment. They cannot afford to stay open and if they close, they may never open again. Specifically, I support the First Five Years Fund's ask for immediate relief to: -Ensure child care providers (both home- and center-based) who are closed will continue to receive funding that will allow them to pay staff and cover fixed costs, including but not limited to business interruption grants. Child care providers vary widely in their current structures and funding streams. No one financial tool will work for all providers, thus it is essential that child care be included in all available recovery programs. -Make sure that all child care providers who are staying open during the crisis have the support necessary to do so and that the children attending their programs – particularly children of first responders, health care providers, and other essential personnel – are receiving assistance. -Sustain the market today and into the future by providing assistance to child care centers and family child care homes as any other small business receiving relief. I urge you to support our child care providers so they can stay open, stay healthy, and stay in their homes. We need this today, not tomorrow! Thank you.
